Pilot Run
ProductionAlso known as: Trial batch, Test batch, Pilot batch, R&D batch
A small-scale production run to validate a formulation before full manufacturing.
What It Means
A pilot run is a small-scale manufacturing batch used to validate that a formulation can be successfully produced at scale. It tests ingredient compatibility, manufacturing process parameters, equipment settings, and preliminary stability. Pilot batches are typically 10-20% of a full production batch. Results inform whether the formulation is ready for commercial production or needs reformulation.
What It Is Not
Pilot runs are NOT finished products for sale (though some may be used for initial testing/market samples under certain conditions). Pilot run success does not guarantee production-scale success — scale-up can introduce new challenges. Not all CMOs offer pilot runs as a separate service.
