ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

Issued by International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

Standard

Audit Scope

Specifies requirements for an environmental management system: environmental policy, planning, implementation, operation, performance evaluation, and continual improvement.

What It Proves

An organization has implemented an environmental management system that meets ISO 14001 requirements, third-party audited by an accredited certification body.

What It Does Not Prove

ISO 14001 does NOT measure environmental impact directly; it certifies the MANAGEMENT SYSTEM exists and is being followed. A 14001-certified facility may have higher emissions than a non-certified facility — the cert validates process not outcome. Verify via accreditation-body lookup (ANAB, UKAS, etc.).
