NSF/ANSI 455-2 — Dietary Supplements GMP
Issued by NSF International + American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) joint publication; certified by NSF International
StandardAudit Scope
Voluntary U.S. consensus standard specifically for dietary supplement GMP, jointly published by NSF + AHPA. Designed as a more prescriptive overlay on top of 21 CFR Part 111. Widely adopted by major supplement contract manufacturers. Annual third-party audit + facility inspection.
What It Proves
Third-party NSF audit confirms the manufacturing facility meets the NSF/ANSI 455-2 dietary-supplement-specific GMP standard. More prescriptive than 21 CFR Part 111 baseline alone. Verifiable via NSF's contract manufacturer database.
What It Does Not Prove
Does NOT certify any specific product's safety, efficacy, or label-claim accuracy — only the facility's manufacturing-process quality. NSF/ANSI 173 is the separate standard for product-level contents verification. Does NOT replace FDA regulatory authority over dietary supplements. NSF/ANSI 455-2 supersedes older generic 'NSF GMP' designations for supplement-specific scope, though both terms appear in vendor materials. NSF for Sport program (banned-substance testing) is distinct.
