USDA BioPreferred Certified Biobased Product

Issued by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Certification

Audit Scope

Voluntary federal labeling program verifying biobased content percentage in product per ASTM D6866 radiocarbon testing. Covers products derived from plants, marine organisms, and forestry materials. Distinct from USDA Organic.

What It Proves

ASTM D6866-tested biobased content percentage meets the USDA BioPreferred program threshold for the product category. Public catalog lists certified products and their measured biobased content.

What It Does Not Prove

Does NOT mean the product is organic (USDA NOP is a separate program). Does NOT certify product safety, efficacy, or environmental impact beyond biobased content measurement. Does NOT cover the WHOLE supply chain — only the biobased content fraction is tested per ASTM D6866. Biobased ≠ biodegradable ≠ sustainable.
