USP <2023> Microbiological Examination of Nonsterile Dietary Supplements

Issued by United States Pharmacopeia (USP)

Standard

Audit Scope

Specifies microbial enumeration tests (total aerobic microbial count, total combined yeast/mold count) and absence-of-specified-microorganisms tests for dietary supplements. Includes acceptance criteria by product type and dose form.

What It Proves

A dietary supplement product or ingredient has been tested per USP-specified microbiological procedures and met published acceptance criteria for the product type.

What It Does Not Prove

USP <2023> is a TEST STANDARD, not a vendor certification. Acceptance criteria differ by dose form (raw botanical, finished capsule, liquid). A blanket 'USP <2023> compliant' claim is meaningless without (a) product-type qualifier, (b) lot-specific test results, (c) ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab attribution.
