Heavy Metals Testing
TestingAlso known as: Heavy metal screening, Elemental impurities, ICP-MS testing
Testing for toxic metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium) in supplements.
What It Means
Heavy metals testing screens for toxic elements including lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd). Methods include ICP-MS and ICP-OES. California Prop 65 sets the most stringent US limits. USP <232>/<233> and ICH Q3D provide reference standards. Botanical and mineral ingredients are at highest risk for heavy metal contamination.
What It Is Not
Passing heavy metals testing means levels are below specified limits — NOT that the product contains zero heavy metals. Limits vary by jurisdiction (FDA, Prop 65, USP, international). A product can pass one standard while failing another.
