Ingredient Sourcing

Business

Also known as: Raw material sourcing, Supply chain sourcing, Ingredient procurement

The process of selecting and purchasing raw materials for supplement manufacturing.

What It Means

Ingredient sourcing encompasses identifying, qualifying, and purchasing raw materials for supplement production. Key considerations include: supplier qualification (audits, COAs, testing history), supply chain transparency (country of origin, processing steps), regulatory status (NDI, GRAS, banned ingredients), and quality specifications. Ingredient quality directly impacts finished product quality, and supply chain opacity is a major industry challenge.

What It Is Not

Sourcing is NOT just purchasing — it includes supplier qualification, ongoing monitoring, and supply chain risk management. The cheapest ingredient source is rarely the best value when testing failures, batch rejections, and recalls are factored in.
