NOP (National Organic Program)

Certification

Also known as: USDA Organic, National Organic Program, Organic certification

USDA program establishing standards for organic agricultural products in the US.

What It Means

The USDA National Organic Program develops and enforces consistent national standards for organically produced agricultural products. For supplements, organic certification under NOP covers ingredient sourcing, handling, and processing. Certification is performed by USDA-accredited certifying agents (QAI, QCS, Oregon Tilth, etc.) through annual inspections.

What It Is Not

Organic certification addresses agricultural practices — it does NOT verify supplement safety, efficacy, potency, or cGMP compliance. 'Organic' does not mean 'natural,' 'non-GMO,' or 'chemical-free.' Products labeled 'made with organic ingredients' have a lower threshold than 'certified organic.'
