USP (United States Pharmacopeia)
CertificationAlso known as: USP, Pharmacopeia, USP-NF
Independent scientific organization that sets quality standards for medicines and supplements.
What It Means
The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is an independent, scientific nonprofit that sets standards for the identity, strength, quality, and purity of medicines, dietary supplements, and food ingredients. USP standards are enforceable by FDA — if a supplement claims to contain a USP-grade ingredient, it must meet USP specifications. The USP Verified mark is a separate, voluntary product certification program.
What It Is Not
Using USP-grade ingredients is NOT the same as having the USP Verified mark. USP standards are ingredient-level specifications; USP Verified is a product-level certification program that includes manufacturing audit, product testing, and ongoing monitoring. Many products use USP-grade ingredients without being USP Verified.
