Top 7 Assessed Supplement Testing Labs (2026)

Last verified: March 15, 2026 | Next review: September 15, 2026

We independently assessed 7 dietary supplement testing laboratories and ranked them by verified accreditations and information transparency. The top-ranked lab, Alkemist Labs, holds 1 independently confirmed credentials. Testing labs are upstream of manufacturing: the quality of your testing determines the quality of your quality data. This ranking helps supplement brands identify labs with publicly verifiable capabilities. Every listing on this page is free. Rankings are not influenced by payment.

Dietary supplement manufacturers must comply with 21 CFR Part 111 (Current Good Manufacturing Practice for dietary supplements). This includes requirements for personnel, facilities, equipment, production, laboratory operations, and record-keeping.

How We Ranked These Labs

This ranking uses three criteria, applied in order:

  1. Independently verified accreditations (more = higher rank). “Verified” means we confirmed the credential through a public database: ISO accreditation body registries, A2LA, NVLAP, or equivalent recognized accreditation programs.
  2. Information transparency (fewer unverifiable items = higher rank). We track what we tried to find but could not verify about each lab. Fewer gaps indicates more publicly available information.
  3. Alphabetical order as the final tiebreaker.

This ranking rewards public accountability and credential transparency. It does not measure testing accuracy, turnaround time, customer service, pricing, or analytical capability beyond what public records show. A lab ranked #7 may be the best fit for your project. Always evaluate labs against your specific requirements.

Why Third-Party Testing Matters

Under 21 CFR Part 111, supplement manufacturers must verify the identity, purity, and composition of their products. Many manufacturers use in-house labs for routine testing. Third-party labs provide independent verification, which is critical for three reasons:

  • No conflict of interest. The lab has no financial stake in whether your product passes.
  • Retailer requirements. Amazon, Walmart, and other major retailers increasingly require third-party Certificates of Analysis for supplement listings.
  • Consumer trust. Independent lab verification is the evidence behind claims like “tested for purity” or “heavy-metals verified.”

Detailed Profiles

Alkemist Labs

Garden Grove, California

Alkemist Labs is an independent botanical and mushroom testing laboratory in Garden Grove, California. Founded by Elan Sudberg, the company specializes in identity and potency testing for natural products using HPTLC (High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography), microscopy, and HPLC methods. Their ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation through A2LA specifically covers dietary supplement and botanical identification — a focused scope that reflects their deep specialization. Alkemist Labs maintains one of the largest collections of analyzed and verified botanical reference materials in the industry, containing over 15,000 specimens spanning 20 years. This collection is critical for identity testing accuracy. AG1 (Athletic Greens) is a notable client. Alkemist publishes a biannual report on the top botanicals and fungi that commonly fail identity testing, providing transparency that is rare in the testing industry. They are a smaller, specialized lab compared to Eurofins or SGS, which means more personalized service but potentially longer wait times during peak demand.

Eurofins provides identity, potency, purity, stability, and contaminant testing for dietary supplements using HPLC, UPLC, GC, LCMS, and ICP-MS technologies. They test botanicals, vitamins, minerals, sports nutrition products, and pet supplements. Their stability testing services include both accelerated and real-time shelf-life studies. Eurofins is publicly traded (EUFI.PA) and employs over 62,000 people globally, making them one of the largest testing organizations in the world. This scale provides redundancy and capacity but may mean less personalized service for smaller supplement brands.

NSF tests for label accuracy, contaminant screening (heavy metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, microbial), and banned substances through their Certified for Sport program. NSF is widely recognized by retailers and regulators — many major retail chains require NSF GMP certification as a baseline for supplement listing. Their lab network spans North America, Europe, and China, with ingredient testing available through their Shanghai facility for brands sourcing from Asia. NSF also operates the GMP facility certification program that many contract manufacturers pursue.

How to Choose a Testing Lab

A high ranking on this list does not mean a lab is right for your project. The right lab depends on your specific testing needs. Consider these factors:

  • Testing scope. Not every lab covers every test type. If you need identity testing, potency, heavy metals, and stability, confirm the lab offers all four. Some labs specialize in botanical identification; others focus on finished product release testing.
  • Accreditation scope. ISO 17025 accreditation applies to specific test methods, not the entire lab. Confirm the lab is accredited for the specific tests you need, not just accredited in general.
  • Turnaround time. Standard turnaround varies from 5 to 15 business days. Rush testing is available at most labs for an additional fee. Turnaround affects your production schedule.
  • Regulatory acceptance. If you sell internationally, confirm the lab's results are accepted in your target markets. Health Canada, TGA, and EU authorities may have specific lab requirements.
  • COA clarity. Request a sample Certificate of Analysis before committing. A good COA clearly states test methods, specifications, results, and the analyst's credentials. See our guide on how to read a COA.
