Independent third-party organization that tests and certifies supplement manufacturing facilities and products.
What It Means
NSF International is an independent organization that develops public health standards and provides testing and certification services. For supplements, NSF offers: GMP Certification to the NSF/ANSI 455-2 standard (a published standard that NSF, UL, or Perry Johnson Registrars can each certify facilities to), Contents Certification (product-level testing), and Certified for Sport (banned substance testing for athletes). NSF also runs separate GMP registration programs for dietary ingredients, China-market supplements, and warehousing/distribution. NSF is one of the most recognized third-party certifiers in the supplement industry.
What It Is Not
NSF is NOT a government agency. It is an independent, not-for-profit organization. 'NSF Certified' is ambiguous because NSF offers multiple programs (GMP, Contents, Sport). Always verify WHICH NSF program applies.
