GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative)

Certification

Also known as: GFSI, GFSI Benchmarked

Industry body that benchmarks food safety certification schemes for equivalence and rigor.

What It Means

The Global Food Safety Initiative is an industry-driven initiative that benchmarks food safety management schemes (SQF, FSSC 22000, BRC, IFS, etc.) against a common set of requirements. GFSI does not issue certifications directly — it recognizes other schemes as meeting its benchmarking requirements. 'GFSI Certified' means certified under a GFSI-recognized scheme.

What It Is Not

GFSI does NOT certify facilities or products. It benchmarks certification schemes. Saying 'GFSI Certified' without specifying the actual scheme (SQF, FSSC 22000, BRC, etc.) is imprecise. The specific scheme matters because each has different requirements and scope.
