Switching manufacturers takes planning. The work is in your contract, your records and your stock levels, and it goes best when you start before you tell your current manufacturer.

The short answer

Read your current agreement for formula ownership and notice terms first. Collect your formula, specification, label files and recent certificates of analysis. Qualify the new manufacturer, sign a quality agreement, and compare its first batch to your specification. Update your label name line and Amazon records, and keep the old plant producing until the new batch passes.

The six steps

  1. 1. Read your current agreement before you give notice

Your contract decides who owns the formula, how much notice you owe, and whether minimum orders are still due. Look for clauses on formula or intellectual property ownership, exclusivity, and raw materials or packaging bought for your product. If the ownership terms are unclear, have a lawyer read the contract.

  2. 2. Collect your product's records

Ask for your formula with each ingredient's amount and form, your finished-product specification, label files and recent certificates of analysis. Whether the manufacturer must hand over each record depends on your agreement, so ask before the relationship ends.

  3. 3. Qualify the new manufacturer

Check registrations, third-party cGMP certificates and recent inspection history, then send a written request for quote built on your specification. Agree a quality agreement before the first batch, so testing and release duties are written down.

  4. 4. Run a first batch and compare it to your specification

Read the first certificate of analysis line by line against your specification. Check the label, capsule or tablet size, color and taste against your current product. People who reorder will notice a change you missed.

  5. 5. Update your label and marketplace records

Check the name line on your label, and send the new plant's cGMP certificate to any marketplace that asks for one. On Amazon, the listing also carries a manufacturer name.

  6. 6. Overlap production so you never run out

Keep ordering from your current manufacturer until the new plant's first batch passes your checks. Count back from the new plant's lead time plus your testing time to set the last order date.

For step three, our manufacturer evaluation guide, RFQ template and quality agreements guide walk through each check. For step four, see how to read a certificate of analysis. For step six, the lead times guide and inventory visibility SOP kit help set the last order date.

Marketplace records

Amazon requires every dietary supplement to come from a facility with a current third-party cGMP audit or certification, and its detail page rules list the manufacturer name. Frequently Asked Questions

Who owns my supplement formula when I switch manufacturers?

Your manufacturing agreement decides it. Read its ownership and intellectual property clauses before you give notice, and have a lawyer read them if they are unclear.

What does Amazon need when my manufacturer changes?

Amazon requires every dietary supplement to come from a facility with a current third-party cGMP audit or certification, submitted to a testing, inspection and certification provider. Amazon's detail page rules also list the manufacturer name, so update both when you switch.

How long should production overlap during a switch?

Long enough for the new plant's first batch to be made, tested and approved before your current stock runs out. Start from the new plant's quoted lead time, add your own testing and approval time, and keep your current manufacturer producing until then.
